Sutterwriters

Sutterwriters was founded by Lawrence Spann, Ph.D. in February 2002 to give patients, health professionals, caregivers (and just about anyone) a safe place to express themselves through writing. Dr. Spann was inspired while completing his PhD in Creative Writing by Pat Schneider who successfully used writing to empower women living in low cost housing in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Sutterwriters started as a voluntary activity for Spann, grew quickly and eventually was funded by Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento.

It became the Literature, Arts, and Medicine Program (LAMP) in 2003 and in three years published nine on-demand books and brought delight to the Sacramento community through organized readings and workshops. Dr. Spann personally led 500 writing groups and helped others establish groups of their own. LAMP was cut due to a hospital financial shortfall in June 2007.

The good news is that you can still write with Sutterwriters. See Write With Us for ongoing writing groups you can join that are organized by those who have been touched, inspired and even "healed" through the program. All are offered at minimal or no cost and open to all.
